Side view. Ya, half of the tip of his finger is missing. Plus a little bit of bone. eeeewwww. This is about the only reality of the accident that I could look at, however our 3 year old was fascinated when Daddy showed his stub to her. I did get glimpses of it, but for fear of passing out, I pretty much avoided all the grusomeness of it.
The hand specialist came after about 3 or more hours of sitting in the ER room, wondering if the finger could be repaired and a lot of pain. I had to leave the room several times, because of light headedness and feeling myself go into shock mode myself. I felt bad leaving him, but I got to the point that if I didn't leave they would have had me on oxygen. lol Amazing how your own body can react to someone elses trauma.
The hand specialist was awsome!! First off he had a realy humble sense of humor, and just brightened our night up. He was very soft spoken so when something funny was said, you almost didn't expect it from him. One of the first things he said was, "I guess when I ask you how you are doing, you could say you are feeling a little short handed." Then he told me that we would need to put Chris on a special diet. I took him seriously, hehe, but then a few minutes later, he said " Aren't you going to ask me what the special diet is?" I'm thinking ya, whatever I need to do to get chris better. : ) The doctor then said "Finger Foods". hehe, he was so cute. Now if I told the jokes, people would be like, "Cheesy!", but this guy had a realy fun and humble way of being witty, and it realy helped Chris out a lot during the reconstructive surgery. He asked Chris if he knew any animal imitations. Chris said "well, not realy?" So then the doctor asked him "What does a coyote say?" "OOOWWW!"
Then after the surgery, he went and got Chris a prescription and when he handed it to him he said "Coyote repellent".
I waited around the corner of the room while the doctor, clipped away at the exposed bone, and then pulled the skin up and over his finger to close it off. I could hear them talking, and he was just so nice the whole time. Chris said that he realy helped him take his mind off the pain during the process by talking to him. While he was clipping the bone, Chris said he could feel jolts go down his arm. eeehhhh, not fun! Poor guy finally got some dinner at 1:00 in the morning, and then tried to get some sleep which he didn't realy get until 5 am. He is still sleeping now, and said it feels better.
